"Conversation Covens": myth & crafting

Women need to get together with other women and share conversation, woman to woman, life to life, heart to heart. As it happens, we women tend to thrive when surrounded by women who share, empathize and talk us through whatever the moment holds. We do well, it seems, in covens. In fact, as a friend put it, “our feminine spirit needs a coven to renew.” No, we don’t mean cackling witches, scary pointed hats or even Wiccan earth-based spirituality. We mean “Conversation Covens”.

“Coven,” in medieval English, was a variation of the word ‘convent’, both of which were derived from from the Latin conventus - meaning assembly or gathering - and had no association with witches, neither the persecuted and maligned ones, nor the wise women the word once designated.

If forming a coven - a “Conversation Coven” - is something you would like to do, we have some suggestions to help you do so. By this, we mean creating a group and place for deeper conversations using myths as a starting point. If you are in the Portland-Vancouver metro area, we will be delighted to facilitate the group for you. If you are farther afield, we are creating study guides to help you get the conversation started.

These “Conversation Covens” can simply consist of deep, heart to heart discussions and conversations, or they may also include grounding the discussions, concepts and feelings through handwork projects. Here are some of the topics we have to offer you:

adameveapples2A letter from Eve

Eve, the original woman herself, as you might well imagine, has her own perspective on the Garden of Eden story - and that fateful apple - you and I have been told since childhood. Creativity, knowledge and toting apples all come into it...What is Eve's legacy to you? Project: Eve's Apple Tote, a crocheted and felted tote bag.

amatcaveAmaterasu's Jewels

Amaterasu, “That which illuminates Heaven,” is the Japanese Sun Goddess whose realization of her own magnificent radiance changed the world. Hers is a story of light, darkness, merriment and storminess... What is yours? Project: one of four beaded jewelry sets.

windscarfsmlEurynome and her windscarf

At one time known as the Great Goddess of all Things, Eurynome rose from Chaos and began dancing. In so doing, she set that cheeky North Wind in motion, and the rest is history... How do you dance the dance of life and tap into it's creative force? Project: crocheted airy 'windscarf'.

kenyanmoonsqKenyan Moon

If the Moon passing over the savanahs of Kenya were to tell us about what she's seen, she might well remind us of the absolute necessity and wisdom of paying  thoughtful attention to how giving and taking  – to and from others, our environment, our world – can affect the harmony and balance of our personal, national and worldly lives. How does attentiveness and thoughtfulness affect you and your life? Project: sewn and beaded necklace and earrings.

3sstrssmlThree sisters journey

Wearing different hats while collaborating in the creative process - as well as in life’s journey - is what it’s all about for the three sisters - corn, beans and squash - in the Iroquois and Cherokee traditional stories. What is it for you? Project: one of three crocheted hats.
