New! DWCS classes and workshops

Fancy learning how to crochet Eve’s Apple Tote or sewing and beading the Kenyan Moon necklace sets while listening and discussing their stories with your friends and a real, live instructor to help you through any snags? Well, you can: Teresa Dane Marcel, our ‘chief Divine Woman’ is now teaching classes and leading workshops.

Yes, DWCS is an online-only store, so where, you may understandably be wondering, would we hold our classes and workshops applying the DWCS concept of exploring self-truths via myth and story and grounding them through handwork projects?

The answer is simple: she’ll come to you! If you and your friends, sewing group, crochet guild, or beading aficionados would rather listen to the stories and learn how to make any of our projects face to face, rather than from one of our videos, give us a call at 503 534 2600 or e-mail us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Teresa will be happy to tailor a class or workshop to your group’s needs and preferences.

Kenyan Moon Jewelry Sets

kenyanmoonml

We recently went to a local bead show with a mission: to find some of those fabulous fair trade Kenyan Kazuri beads to pair up with some scrumptious Indonesia batik fabrics in all four of our colorways. I am happy to report that our mission was successful.

Then the fun started. We played with various ways to combine the beads and fabric into unusual and appealing jewelry sets, and as we did so, it occurred to us that we were using materials that related to President Obama’s international heritage – Kenya, the land of his father, and Indonesia, where he spent some of his childhood.

With the addition of a few findings, some hollow tube beads and seed beads, the project started to take shape. And then we came up with a really cool way – and so easy, you will kick yourself for not having thought of it before! – to make fabric beads.

You’ll need to call upon some elementary sewing skills to make them, but the necklaces will barely take you more time to finish than to listen to the Moon tell how she foils hyena’s scheme of greed on the Kenyan savannah. It is a story we were drawn to because it seems to be a good metaphor for the current global financial crisis.

We are working on the patterns, and will have them available for download in the next few days, so check the pattern section regularly!

Welcome to our filming set!

We just finished what turned out to be three days of hard work, fun and excitement – with a dab of stress added in – filming the next three DWCS instructional videos, stories and creative tips.

Check out our BLOG for some photos of one of our sets, created with thought and imagination by our “Video Druid”, Brendan Gill.

This is the set for the “Kenyan Moon necklaces”, the pattern and kits for which, as you read above, will be available shortly in our DWCS shop. All three of the completed videos will follow in a few weeks.
